Meet the Counselor

Mrs. J

Mrs. J

Hi!  I'm Amy Johannesen, and this is my ninth year as the school counselor at Centennial.  I started out as a mental health counselor way back in 1996, but have found that I absolutely LOVE working with kids in a school setting.   If you ever have a concern about your student, please reach out to me - I'm here to help!

Fun Facts about Mrs. J:

  • I grew up on a farm in Kansas (but was a TERRIBLE tractor operator).

  • My first 4-H pigs were named Strawberry and Watermelon.

  • I've lived in 11 different states.

  • I've been in 5 different productions of The Nutcracker Ballet; the first at age 12, and the last at age 42.

  • In 2020, I was named Idaho School Counselor of the Year by the Idaho School Counselor Association.

  • I served on the Idaho School Counselor Association (ISCA) board as the Vice President for Region 2 from 2021-2023.

My Job

My role is to provide services that help all of our students be their best academically, become college and career ready, and develop their social and emotional skills.  I do lots of different things in our school:  give classroom lessons; organize assemblies; plan school-wide awareness campaigns (bullying prevention and kindness are two of my favorites!); offer brief individual counseling, small group counseling, and crisis intervention; and collaborate  with our staff and parents/guardians to help students find success.

Our school's Counseling Program

Centennial's School Counseling Program is based on the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) model for comprehensive school counseling programs.  For more information about services available through our counseling program, please see the brochure found on the services page.

Vision Statement:  The school counseling program at Centennial prepares all Rams Ascend Mountains to Success  in the areas of  academic, social/emotional, and career development.  The school counseling program supports the development and practice of the vital life skills of teamwork, communication, emotional regulation, problem solving, respect and empathy, resilience, and positive attitude.

Mission Statement:  The Centennial school counseling program is dedicated to ensuring high levels of academic and social/emotional learning, and career skills development for ALL by fostering a safe and supportive learning environment that respects the individual needs and differences of all members of the school community, allowing individuals to work to their fullest potential.

Belief Statements:

  • We believe all students should have access to a comprehensive school counseling program that fosters academic, college/career, and social/emotional development.

  • We believe all students are capable of academic and personal growth, and the development of these skills will carry on and promote personal success throughout their lives.

  • We believe all students learn best when provided a safe and supportive environment for learning.

  • We believe parents and guardians are valuable and essential partners in promoting the academic success of their children, and the school counseling program will include and encourage the involvement of parents.
